Artist, do not lose your courage, part of the best that is in you.
Instructions for artists: from Van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo.
✏ “When something inside you begins to say: “You are not an artist,” start writing immediately, my boy. Only in this way can you silence this voice. But the person who, having heard this inner voice, immediately runs to friends and comrades to complain about this misfortune, loses part of his courage, part of the best that is in him. Only those people should be your friends who themselves are waging the same struggle within themselves and who, by their example, awaken in you a thirst for activity.

✏ “I’m not an artist,” how can you speak so cruelly about yourself? Is it not possible to become patient, is it not possible to learn patience from nature, by seeing how slowly the wheat ripens, by seeing how everything grows? Can you consider yourself so dead as to admit that you will never grow again? Is it possible to deliberately hinder your own development? I’m saying all this to explain why talking about whether you’re gifted or not seems so stupid to me…”
And remember: proudly call yourself an artist.
Until next time,
