Why is a series of paintings better than individual paintings?

A series, or collection, is several paintings united by a common message, idea, style (theme, color scheme, format). A large enough collection can become the basis for an independent exhibition.

For marketing:

  1. Offering a series always compares favorably with individual paintings because it allows you to sell an exclusive product. The buyer will be sure that there will be no more similar paintings on the market. A series of paintings can be issued with appropriate certificates confirming that the sold paintings exhaust the entire series. Another option is to secure the buyer’s right to a priority purchase of all new paintings in the series.
  2. A series, or collection of paintings, is a great product for hotels, offices and similar premises where a single design style is in demand.
  3. Promoting series on social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest) has its advantages: by not showing the entire collection at once, but demonstrating only pieces, you can stir up interest and create excitement.
  4. A series of paintings looks better at an exhibition or in a portfolio.
  5. A series of paintings is easier to arrange, say, in a calendar or a set of postcards.

For creativity:

  1. A series of paintings gives you the opportunity to develop one theme or idea without being distracted by the urge to paint everything and about everything. Having completed a collection dedicated to one idea (say, ecology, saving wild animals, a healthy lifestyle, equality of men and women – whatever resonates with you), you can move on to the next one without feeling scattered.
  2. Since painting in series imposes its own restrictions on the theme, color scheme, format, technique, etc., this allows you not to scatter and work in one direction. For example, it is sometimes difficult for me to stick to one format: today I paint a landscape in oil, tomorrow – a still life in pastel, and the day after tomorrow – a portrait in watercolor. Series of paintings require self-organization, and this is useful for creative people.
  3. Creating paintings in series requires discipline not only in technique, but also in the rhythm of work. If you paint occasionally, start a series of seven to ten paintings and keep up the pace until the collection is ready.
