HOW TO CREATE AN ARTIST STATEMENT?

An artist’s future career largely depends on how they present themselves to the public. One of the important marketing tools for any artist is to create your own unique and unforgettable artist statement by answering the questions in this workbook.

Ask yourself questions

Who are you, where is your studio located and what kind of art do you make?

  • Who are you, where is your studio located and what kind of art do you make?
  • Where do you come from and what is your background?
  • What kind of art materials do you use and which techniques?
  • What style of artwork do you produce?
  • What makes your artwork unusual and different from other artists?
  • Why do you create the artwork that you make? Do you have a message to share?
  • Brainstorm in 100 words what kind of art you make.
  • What themes can your work be categorised in?
  • Who is the audience?
  • What things should the audience know to understand your creative process?
  • How is the process and technique important to your work?
  • What inspires you to create your artwork?
  • Which emotions do you feel when you create and look at your artwork?
  • What do you want people to feel when they see your art?
  • Why do you create the art that you create, what do you care about as an artist?
  • Words and phrases to include You can use these phrases to include in your Artist Statement. Fill in what applies to you and your artwork and create your own story. Give some positive comments that people have made about your artwork.

Words and phrases to include:

‘During my exhibitions, people often say …… about my artwork.’ ‘…….inspires me to make my artwork.’ ‘I started creating my art because……’
‘I have been creating art for …..length of time’
‘Creating art makes me feel ……. because…..’
‘The message my artwork gives is…..’
‘My artwork makes my clients feel……..’
‘The symbols in my artwork stand for ……’
‘…. keeps me coming back to my art studio every day to create and improve on my previous piece of artwork’

Words and phrases to avoid:

Avoid the words ‘try’ or ‘hope’ ; these words don’t sound confident.

Also include:

Add a high quality and current portrait photograph of yourself perhaps with the backdrop of your art studio. This gives your audience a good impression of you at work. Include your contact details so that interested people know how to connect with you.

Final draft

Type up all of your text that you have written down and include our suggested words and phrases that fit with your artist statement and make it your own story.
